How to Decode a VIN (and Why You Should)

Per federal regulation, every vehicle sold in the US has a unique 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This number contains encoded information about the vehicle — and decoding it is the first step to understanding any vehicle's history.
Where to Find Your VIN
The VIN is located in several places:
- Dashboard near the windshield (driver side)
- Driver side door jamb
- Vehicle registration documents
- Insurance card
- Under the hood on some vehicles
What Each Position Means
| Position | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Country of manufacture | 1,2,3 = USA; J = Japan |
| 2-3 | Manufacturer | 1FA = Ford; 1HG = Honda |
| 4-8 | Vehicle attributes | Model, engine, body type |
| 9 | Check digit | 0-9 or X (validates VIN) |
| 10 | Model year | A=1980, ... Y=2000, 1=2001... |
| 11 | Assembly plant | Manufacturer-specific code |
| 12-17 | Production sequence | Unique vehicle number |
