How to Decode a VIN (and Why You Should)

Per federal regulation, every vehicle sold in the US has a unique 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This number contains encoded information about the vehicle — and decoding it is the first step to understanding any vehicle's history.

Where to Find Your VIN

The VIN is located in several places:

  • Dashboard near the windshield (driver side)
  • Driver side door jamb
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • Insurance card
  • Under the hood on some vehicles
