How to Decode a VIN (and Why You Should)

Every passenger vehicle built for sale in the US since model year 1981 carries a unique 17-character Vehicle Identification Number, assigned under 49 CFR Part 565. The characters are not random: each position encodes something about how and where the vehicle was built. Decoding it is the first step to checking a vehicle against the government record.

One quirk worth knowing before you start: the letters I, O and Q never appear anywhere in a VIN, because they are too easily confused with 1 and 0. If you think you see one, look again.

Where to Find Your VIN

The VIN is located in several places:

  • Dashboard near the windshield (driver side)
  • Driver side door jamb
  • Vehicle registration documents
  • Insurance card
  • Under the hood on some vehicles

What Each Position Means

Two positions deserve a closer look. Position 9 is a check digit computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters, so a VIN with a transposed or invented character will usually fail the calculation — it is the cheapest way to catch a typo, or a fabricated number on a listing. Position 10 cycles every 30 years and skips the letters I, O, Q, U and Z along with the digit 0, which is why a 1995 and a 2025 vehicle can share the same year character. Use the rest of the VIN, or the vehicle itself, to tell which cycle you are in.

Why Decode a VIN?

Decoding a VIN helps you:

  • Verify the vehicle's specifications match the seller's claims
  • Check for open recalls that apply to that exact vehicle, not just its year and model
  • Look up crash-test ratings, complaints and investigations for the same build
  • Catch an invalid or altered number before you pay for anything else

What a VIN Decode Will Not Tell You

This is where a lot of buying advice overreaches. Decoding a VIN returns the vehicle’s build specification— what the factory made. It does not return its history. A decode cannot tell you whether a car has been stolen, written off, flood-damaged, odometer-rolled, or given a branded title, and no VIN decoder on any site can, because none of that information is encoded in the number.

For those questions you need a records check, not a decode:

  • Title brands, odometer readings and total-loss records NMVTIS, the federal title database run by the US Department of Justice, through one of its approved providers.
  • Theft records— the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s free VINCheck lookup, or your state’s DMV.
  • Open safety recalls NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup, which is authoritative and free.
