The contact owns a 2017 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving 20 MPH, the driver’s side headrest unexpectedly exploded. The contact stated that it felt like being struck by a ball in the back of the head. The contact had a mild headache and treated the headache with painkillers. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.

Loss of windshield defrosting and dash air vents - systems and devices intended to provide or maintain the operator's ability to see the roadway severe cabin temperature hazards. Resulting in loss of ability to maintain driver's ability to see roadway during rainy/foggy/cold conditions. Dash air vents result in severe cabin temperature hazards in heat higher temperatures. No warning lights or messages or symptoms before, air flow just stops and not having air flow is sign of problem. Vehicle was taken to both dealership service center and independent service center after issue returned.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM — Filed 09/02/2026

Customer Satisfaction Notification T23 (TSB 18-031-17). Under this T23 a PCM software flash and a replacement EGR valve assembly were required. My dealer only did the software flash and my car now threw out an active PO401 (EGR Flow Insufficient Detected"). Which is a direct result of the failed software update and the physical damage caused by this known issue. Dealer is refusing the repair along with the manufacturer.

Vehicle overheats while at a stop. Problem has been happening for past 8 months. Leaking antifreeze under transmission. Shop unable to diagnose problem after various attempts. Researched problem online and discovered many 2017 durango owners are having issue. Many saying it's due to manufacture problem. It's a safety issue for my family and I since I don't know what the problem is to fix it.

Runaway vehicle, police was called after car stopped and I was able to safely park it on the side of the freeway.also a police officer on motorcycle came the the scene to make sure I was able to get a towing scheduled. Dealership currently confirmed gas pedal accelerator needing to be replaced.

The vehicle involved is a 2017 Dodge Durango. The primary systems malfunctioning include the engine cooling system, braking system, and electrical system. The engine repeatedly overheats while driving and has produced smoke from under the hood, creating a risk of breakdown or fire. The braking system is unreliable, with the brake pedal going down too far and not providing proper stopping power, increasing the risk of a crash. The electrical system malfunctions unpredictably, including windshield wipers and interior controls turning on and off without input. These issues have occurred multiple times and have left the vehicle stranded on the side of the road, including at night. This has placed the driver and passengers at risk in unsafe conditions and traffic environments. The problems began shortly after purchase and have been ongoing. The issues have not been properly resolved. A mechanic was supposed to inspect the vehicle, but it is UNKNOWN if a full inspection was completed. Warning signs included overheating temperature readings, smoke, weak braking response, and electrical irregularities prior to failure. The vehicle is currently not reliable or safe to operate due to these ongoing safety defects.

I bought my car with 50,000 miles. I didn’t even have 55,000 and my car started have electrical issues with the speedometer, my dashboard started glitching with all the lights including an A with exclamation mark. I took it to the Dodge dealership in Huntsville and said they couldn’t do anything about it since the recall seemed to be repair but they couldn’t clear the code. My truck has had the same issue with the recall. My car was never repaired from the recall. My vehicle is dangerous to drive on the freeway as I will get this code a! And the speed will automatically drop. I really need help as this recall was never resolved on my car

I had just parked my vehicle in my drive and turned it off. I opened my door then sat back in my seat to stretch my back, sitting straight up with my head against the headrest, before getting out. As soon as I leaned my head against the headrest it, for lack of better terms, exploded into the back of my head. It hit me with such force I was not sure what had happened as there was nobody around me that could’ve cause it. Sure enough there was no accident to cause it. I have had a headache and back pain for a week due to it.

On [XXX] 2024 my wife, son, and I were sitting at a stop light on [XXX] at approximately 16:40 hours when we heard a loud pop in the vehicle and my wife's head was pushed forward by the passenger side seat head rest, causing pain to my wife's head and neck, and shoulder muscles. Upon inspection of the head rest, it had become separated in the middle (pictures attached). Vehicle is equipped with the active head restraint system. My wife has not received medical attention yet but is quite sore this morning. We will contact our dealer to replace the head rest (and the driver's side head rest) and request the defective head rest be returned to us so it is available for NHTSA inspection. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance rep, or others yet. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This happened suddenly without any warning while we were stopped at a traffic light. Our safety was put at risk by the sudden failure and violent expansion to the head rest causing pain to my wife. Had this occurred on the driver's side while the vehicle was in motion, it could have caused a motor vehicle crash resulting in severe injury, property damage, or even death. The sunroof spontaneously exploded and shattered all over while driving on the highway at approximately 65 miles an hour. Mother and child were in the vehicle. The sunroof was opened on "vent" position. The sunroof cover was also opened (cover inside the vehicle) Mother and child sustained minor physical injuries however, this could have been a major much bigger accident with many other vehicles on the road involved.

No lights on the dashboard were on but the radio/ climate control center screen was flashing. Shut screen off. Was involved in motor vehicle accident with front end collision. Police report and insurance notified. Air bags did not deploy. Approximate speed on impacted was 30mph. Two days prior the auto stop and start system was flashing on dashboard.

STRUCTURE — Filed 12/07/2021

The suspension rod that lifts and holds the liftgate open snapped at the bolt and broke. The liftgate can only be opened and close manually now. It has fallen on my arm and caused bruises multiple times. I fear it can fall on my head or my children's. I haven't taken it to get repaired as I'm sure it will be costly and money is very tight. I only had this vehicle for 4 years when this happened and it has low mileage. I have read about other Durangos having this same issue.

Vehicle was traveling around 60 moh.. Jumped curve and hit a tree. Air bags failed to deploy. Driver sustained multiple injuries including fractured pelvis, torn aeorta, hemothorax under ribcage, and several cuts, scrapes, and bruises requiring stitches.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THERE WAS GREY AND WHITE SMOKE COMING FROM THE TAIL PIPE. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING HOT WHILE THE START AND STOP WARING LIGHT AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT COOLANT WAS PUT IN THE VEHICLE TO COOL DOWN THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE COIL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THE HEAD GASKET WAS CRACKED AND LEAKING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT CONTACTED REDLANDS CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM (500 W REDLANDS BLVD, REDLANDS, CA 92373) WHERE THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO BE REPAIRED DUE TO WARRANTY EXPIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

ON JANUARY 6, 2020, I PLACED MY 2017 DODGE DURANGO INTO PARK IN MY HOME'S DRIVEWAY AND EXITED THE VEHICLE, LEAVING THE EMPTY VEHICLE IDLING. APPROXIMATELY 30 SECONDS LATER, THE VEHICLE SLIPPED OUT OF PARK AND INTO DRIVE AND ROLLED AWAY, FORWARD, INTO MY GARAGE, CAUSING SIGNIFICANT PROPERTY DAMAGE. I HAVE THE INCIDENT RECORDED ON VIDEO, BUT I AM UNABLE TO UPLOAD IT TO THIS WEBSITE. I WILL HAPPILY FORWARD IT BY EMAIL OR OTHER MEANS IF REQUESTED. I ALSO HAVE PHOTOS OF THE GARAGE DAMAGE. I AM AWARE THAT DODGE/JEEP/RAM HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE WITH THE DIAL GEAR SHIFTER SLIPPING OUT OF GEAR RESULTING IN ROLLAWAY INCIDENTS. NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED AND THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. I HAVE THREE SMALL CHILDREN THAT THANKFULLY WERE NOT NEAR THE VEHICLE WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. CONSUMERS SHOULD BE MADE AWARE THAT THIS ISSUE WITH THE DIAL SHIFTER REMAINS ONGOING AND A RECALL SHOULD BE ISSUED BY THE MANUFACTURER. THIS DESCRIPTION OF THE INCIDENT HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY I GO TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND OPEN UP THE BACK HATCH. ONCE IT IS OPEN ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS I HAVE CUT MY UPPER ARM/FOREARM AT THE POINT WHERE THE REAR TAILLIGHTS ARE SEPARATED. I HAVE FELT THE AREA AND HAD FAMILY AND FRIENDS DO THE SAME. THEY ALL AGREE IT IS VERY SHARP AND HAZARDOUS.

AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY AND I FEEL LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE. I WAS INFORMED BY THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER THAT THE AIRBAG SENSORS WERE DESTROYED AND THE BAG SHOULD HAVE GONE OFF.

YES, I TOLD IAB THERE OF THE NYPD THAT LIKE I BELIEVE THAT THE HORN ON THE VEHICLE THERE THE DARK UNDERCOVER NYPD VAN THERE SPEEDING THROUGH THE LIGHT THERE ON 99 ST AND 63 DRIVE THERE WAS NOT LOUD ENOUGH WITH THE SIRENS THERE, THE OPERATOR OF THE BLACK NYPD VAN THERE UNDERCOVER JUST USED HIS RED LIGHTS AND LIKE A SMALL SOUND THERE. THEY SHOULD USE LOUDER SOUNDS THAN THAT AND A LOUDER HORN I TOLD THE IAB THERE OF THE NYPD THERE. YES, WHEN I SAW IT, I WAS STUNNED THERE AND WAS THE FIRST TO DIAL 911 THERE AND TOLD THE 911 OPERATOR OF THE NYPD THERE ON 10-8-2018 AROUND 1 PM "I THINK ONE OF YOUR NYPD CARS WAS IN AN ACCIDENT..." YES, LATER ON, I THINK I FOUND OUT THE ERROR OF THE NYPD OFFICER IN THE BLACK VAN THERE, HE DID NOT USE LOUD ENOUGH HORNS SPEEDING I THINK NORTH ON 99 ST THERE BY 63 DRIVE THERE CAUSING HIM TO SMACK RIGHT INTO THE WHITE CAR THERE THAT BADLY. WHEN THE STREET HAD CLEARED WITH THE FDNY AND EMS AND THE NYPD 112 WERE JUST THERE, I FOUND ALL MIRRORS AND THOUGH SOMEBODY GOT INJURED THERE AT THE SCENE. I DID NOT THINK OF THIS AT THAT TIME SO EVEN IF I SAW THE NYPD 112, I POINTED THEM TO THE CRASH THERE, I WOULD NOT THINK THIS BACK THEN. YES, INDEED, THE HORN ON THE VEHICLE THERE OF THE UNDERCOVER NYPD VAN WAS NOT LOUD ENOUGH WHEN THE OFFICER WAS SPEEDING THROUGH THE RED LIGHT THERE AND LIKE HE SMACKED INTO THE VEHICLE THERE. I STARTED TO BACK OUT OF MY DAUGHTERS GARAGE AND FELT THE TIRE HIT SOMETHING. I DIDN'T WANT TO BACK OVER IT SO I PULLED FORWARD, PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, OPENED THE DOOR AND STARTED TO GET OUT. I GOT ONE FOOT ON THE GROUND AND THE VEHICLE TOOK OFF IN REVERSE. I WAS THROWN BACK INTO THE SEAT. THE DOOR BEING PARTIALLY OPEN HIT A BOX WHICH FLUNG THE DOOR COMPLETELY OPEN. THE DOOR CLIPPED THE GARAGE DOOR JAM AND PUSHED THE DOOR INTO THE FRONT FENDER DAMAGING IT AND THE DOOR. I'M NOT SURE IF THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED BUT MY WIFE WHO WAS STANDING OUTSIDE SAID SHE WONDERED WHY I WAS BACKING OUT SO FAST. I GOT THE VEHICLE STOPPED JUST OUTSIDE THE DOOR AND SHUT IT OFF. IT ALL SEEMED TO HAPPEN PRETTY FAST.

WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IDLING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WITH THE AUTOMATIC MODE OR STOP/START FEATURE ACTIVATED, IT LUNGED FORWARD WHEN THE CONTACT'S FOOT RELEASED THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF ANOTHER VEHICLE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES CONSISTENT WITH A CERVICAL STRAIN AND BRUISED RIBS, WHICH REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE OCCUPANT IN THE OTHER VEHICLE SUFFERED NO INJURIES. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AWAY FROM THE SCENE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 6,999.

THE OFFICER DRIVING THIS VEHICLE HAD PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK. THIS VEHICLE HAS THE ROTARY KNOB STYLE GEAR SELECTOR. THE OFFICER WAS GETTING HIS K9 PARTNER'S FOOD AND WATER READY IN HIS BACKYARD. ACCORDING TO THE OFFICER, AFTER ABOUT 10 MINUTES, HE HEARD A LOUD NOISE. WHEN HE WENT TO INVESTIGATE THE NOISE, HE FOUND THAT THE SUV HAS DROVE THROUGH HIS GARAGE DOOR. THE OFFICER STATES THAT THE GEAR INDICATOR SHOWED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS IN PARK.
