    Lighting issue

    EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Audi Q3 vehicles equipped with LED headlights. An inoperable front turn signal may not illuminate an indicator, failing to alert the driver to the issue. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

    Consequence

Without an indicator informing the driver of an inoperable turn signal, the driver may turn or change lanes without a signal, increasing the risk of crash.

    Remedy

Audi will notify owners, and dealers will update the body control module (BCM), free of charge. The recall began June 21, 2019. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi's number for this recall is 97DK.

How this compares

At 23 MPG combined, the 2018 Audi Q3 ranks 17th of 18 compact cars EPA rated for 2018 — 5.5 MPG short of the 28.5 MPG median for that group.

That places it among the thirstiest vehicles in its class. If annual mileage is high, the running-cost gap against a class-average rival compounds quickly.

EPA puts annual fuel spend at about $3,300, $1,050 more than the $2,250 typical for the class. Over five years at 15,000 miles a year that is roughly $16,500, a $5,250 difference against a class-median vehicle.

Tailpipe CO₂ is 380 grams per mile — about 5.7 metric tons over 15,000 miles of driving.
