    Brake system issue

    SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DISC:CALIPER

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2017 Cadillac XT5 vehicles manufactured April 16, 2016, to May 9, 2016, and 2017 GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured April 19, 2016, to April 22, 2016. The front brake calipers may have a torn or misaligned caliper piston seal which may allow brake fluid to leak.

    Consequence

If there is a brake fluid leak, braking performance may be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.

    Remedy

GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front brake calipers, replacing the brake caliper assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 12, 2016. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), or 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM's number for this recall is 16096.

What the ratings mean

NHTSA gives the 2017 Cadillac XT5 4 out of 5 stars overall, below the 5-star median for the 7 comparable 2017 vehicles NHTSA rated in this class.

NHTSA published results for every NCAP test in this program, so the overall star rating rests on a complete set of crash and rollover results.

NHTSA's dynamic test put this vehicle's rollover probability at 16.9% in a single-vehicle crash — the figure behind the rollover star rating, published here because the star alone hides how wide each band is.

How this compares

At 22 MPG combined, the 2017 Cadillac XT5 ranks 4th of 7 small SUVs (2WD) EPA rated for 2017 — exactly the 22 MPG median for that group.

That places it in the lower third of its class. If annual mileage is high, the running-cost gap against a class-average rival compounds quickly.

EPA puts annual fuel spend at about $2,800, within $0 of the $2,800 typical for the class — roughly $14,000 over five years.

Tailpipe CO₂ is 395 grams per mile — about 5.9 metric tons over 15,000 miles of driving.
